Challenger tail light inner housing restoration?
« on: February 29, 2016 - 09:07:53 PM »
Years ago when I was gathering parts for my restoration, and having components restored, I reassembled my tail lights and back up light and thought they looked great, with the chromed trim and lenses I carefully polished.  Now that the car is finally home and I have started reassembling it, I think the inner housings look a little dingy.
I talked to my trim restoration guy and he said he wasn't familiar with what plating or finish is correct for these.
Does anyone know?  I don't want to paint them "something close" if they were actually plated.

So are you saying use a dull aluminum paint to make them look correct, and would this pass muster for concours?

NO...of course not. They were never painted from the factory. (sorry..just re-read your WHOLE first post :banghead:)
Please ignore any advice I've given :smilielol:

You could use an ultra-fine soda blast at a very light pressure to get the material new looking again.
Contact Stephan Fournier to get them restored to perfection.... :2thumbs:

Personally, I would just use dull aluminum spray paint :smilielol:

I'll see if I can find someone around here who can light soda blast them to see how that looks.
If not, then on to plan B!  :pullinghair:
As you might have noticed from my picture, it doesn't look like the top shop that nearly bankrupted me while making me feel like they were doing me a favor by working for someone as unimportant as me, didn't mask off correctly for the undercoating around the side marker housing area of the inner quarter panels. Perhaps concours isn't an option on my car at this point.   Maybe if they do a few dozen more hemi, V code and Trans Am Challengers they will figure that detail out.   :faint:
Thanks!

Not sure what agreement you had with your body shop, however the vast majority of them are not doing restorations as we in the hobby think of it. They are there to get the outside of your car to look good, that is about where it stops. Most body shops have no clue or regard for what was done in the factory; if they did they would be a restoration shop (assuming the one you used was marketed as such). Not in anyway taking their side, but I have known many body shop guys over the years and their bread and butter is collision repair; in and out rapidly. Painting a old muscle car is labor intensive and costly, especially to do it right. I can imagine how much it cost you, but most of those shops don't necessarily like doing them because typically the owner expects the car to come back looking like the day it was born, however normal paint and body is more about panel replacement and blending in the color and out the door.

Just out of curiosity did the shop understand that you wanted concours work done ?  Huge difference in a paint job and concours paint work. Also from what I've seen over the years is that what is perfectly acceptable to one person is not acceptable to someone else.  It's a fine line.

The shop in question is not a "body shop", it is a Mopar restoration shop with numerous cars they've done winning Mopar Nationals, Carlisle, MCACN and other major shows, cars featured in MCG articles, etc so I doubt they aren't quite familiar with how the undercoating is masked on the quarter panels around the side marker housings.  Not their first trip around the block so to speak.  So seeing things like that make me wonder if they cut corners on me since I wasn't one of their prominent billionaire clients.
Sorry I went off topic, just seeing that in my picture got my blood pressure up.  My 16 year experience on this car with 2 restoration shops left me with a bad case of PTSD and no money for medical treatment!

If you know someone who has a hobby style blast cabinet and some glass beads that will work. Then some flat clear coat (rattle can) to keep them looking sharp. I have done lots of these with a lot of happy customers.

There is no doubt they charged you big without paying the attention to detail that your car obviously deserves. THIS would drive me insane! And this is one of the reasons i'm building mine in to a driver.

Well I retract my statement, they obviously paid little attention to your desires. I would be having some "words" with them for sure.
