MSD or DUI ??
« on: July 08, 2015 - 08:22:54 AM »
So I am getting a little antsy and feel like doing something to the fish.

Have , for a long time been thinking about upgrading the ignition from a stock, chrome box, set up to an MSD or DUI setup.

My engine is a 318 with jheads, purple cam, headers, 650 cfm Eddie 4 bbl

I figure that an MSD setup would be transferable as-is and a DUI system would be too, with some reprogramming by them.

Thought I would keep an eye open for these at Carlisle.....

Any thoughts?  Is it "worth it" on a small block?

Updating the 40+ year old ign is a good idea IMO.
I have an MSD ign and like it very much. No idea about DUI. Don't know anybody with one. (Bad acronym though  ::))

Thanks -- thats kinda what I was thinking.

I am also playing with the idea of going fuel injection system.....leaning towards Edelbrock and that system needs special attentioon if using with HEI (DUI) style ignitions.....so may stick with MSD.....

I hate the idea of electronic-ing up the fish.....As it stands, if I break down it is much simpler to get going again if something igntion goes.....i carry spare ignition stuff with me....and the carb is mechanical so........but going to MSD and FI means that troubleshooting and more importantly getting going again could be more difficult at the side of teh road.....then again, in theory at least upgrading SHOULD mean less issues overall.....

I've never talked to anyone that swapped over to FI and didn't love the results. Looks like $3000 swap though, so I stick with my four barrel.

I went with the Edelbrock E-Street EFI and I use the FBO HRR 688 box and love it. The EFI cured ALL the problems I had with carbs. So far it's been reliable.

I've run an MSD for almost 15 years.  The newer MSD boxes have red LED light on the box to help with trouble shooting, if needed.  You cant go wrong with opening your gap at .050 and running an MSD box.  You need to keep them dry.   I cant speak for DUI, never run one.......
