8 3/4 inch rear

I just got my car running good so here's my question .The car was orignaly a 383 car now a 440 . It has what I think is a factory 8 3/4 rear .  Wouldn't that be a limited slip set up ? Only 1 tire putting down rubber . Any feed back always help . Thanks

Most 8.75 axles are open....

Easy test - do a burn out and see if you leave 1 mark or 2.  Plus its fun!   :burnout:

They come both ways. Sure grip was an option. Jack up the rear so both wheels are off the ground and rotate one wheel by hand. If the other wheel rotates in the same direction it's a Sure Grip. If it rotates in the opposite direction it's open.

The cone sure grips were not great so you may have a sure grip but it could be worn out too !

An easy test for a limmited slip: jack up the rear of the car and put the trans in neutral. Turn one wheel clockwise and look at the direction of rotation of the other. If its turning the same direction, it's limmited slip. If it turns opposite rotation it is an open diff. Also on the drivers side of the center section, just behind the yoke connection to the drive shaft, is the casting number of the center section. The last three digits should be 741, 742 or 489. An open diff can be changed to limmited with the casting number required for the right assembly. Good luck!
