Steering Column Alignment Sequence ?
« on: July 31, 2015 - 10:29:19 AM »
Inside engine compartment...  Bottom of column tube (where foam seals go) is rubbing on steering shaft coming from steering box.
Inside of car,  I've loosened the 2 bolts that hold plate, the 3 bolts that allow rotation of the interior mount to firewall and the 2 nuts that pull column up to dash.

Whats the proper sequence to tighten everything and keep steering shaft centered in the column ?

I had problems with steering column getting hot. Everyone here has said that I needed the foam seals and I knew that I had them. Turns out the column was not centered and bottom half of seal was gone, not the top half that I could easily see.  :banghead:

Just loosen the three bolts at the firewall.  Move the outer column jacket so the steering shaft is centered and tighten up the three bolts.

I tried that at first. But unless the 2 nuts that hold the column up to the dash are loose, it will not rotate. At first I thought I had to put key in to unlock it, but that made no difference.

Is the section that bolts up to the dash separate from the 3 bolt section and suppose to rotate ?

It doesn't need to rotate.  If the column jacket is too high(steering shaft rubbing on bottom side of column jacket) just push down on it while someone tightens up the three bolts.

Have your wife push down on it while you tighten up the three bolts.
  :D

GOT IT !!   Thank you very much.  :ylsuper:

I was trying to loosen everything up to get it to stay in place.
