Front clutch pack set-up
« on: July 31, 2015 - 06:17:30 PM »
Yes I've heard the stories of 727 explosions.... I bought an aftermarket billet steel front clutch drum and I'm figuring out the best way to pack it with steels and clutches. I've managed to put 5 raysbestos red clutches and 5 kolene steels in the clutch and retain around .074" clearance with a smaller selective snap ring on top. The only way I could fit 5 was to put 4 of the .090" clutches and one smaller .060" clutch.

Was this the right move? I'm following clutch clearance recommendations by turbo action since I'm using their valve body. Oh, and I've got 15 springs in it

The more clutch plate surface area the better the hold under the same line pressure, so IMHO your good! I would check with Turbo Action and just verify your clutch stack clearence. Other than that, the trans doesn't know what thickness each friction and steel is. It just squeezes them!

Thanks, I'm very analytical, so sometimes I dive down a rabbit hole and think about things too much. Keeps me from getting things done.  I've heard 727s called gorilla transmissions because a gorilla could throw it together without checking clearances and it'd still run great

Yes very tough transmission! Just follow instructions, check clearances and work clean. Air test before valve body is installed and it's all good. Best of luck!
