Reflectix on bottom of Shaker base plate ?
« on: September 05, 2015 - 02:57:54 PM »
HP383
650cfm Eldebrock
5-speed
Chrome ignition box
35degree timing without vacuum

Car starts and runs great with water temp at 190-195degrees even when its 90+ degrees outside.  BUT, if it sits for 20min or more, I have to crack the throttle a little and crank for at least 5 seconds before it starts. I have put a double layer of Reflectix on the valley pan which seems to help a little. I've always felt that the shaker is holding the heat close to the engine/carb and not allowing it to escape and felt that was just the nature of the beast. But today I started wondering if I were to put Reflectix on the bottom of the shaker base (carb side) if that would help also. My thought is that since the base gets really hot from the engine heat, then if it was insulated there would be just that much less heat to transfer to the carb.

Thoughts ?

Anything to reflect the heat , this should make a big difference under the carb & it is thin .

Personally I think insulation above the carb is going to trap the heat where you don't want heat... You need to keep the heat out of the carb, not trap it around the carb... :2cents:

First is the crossover blocked?

Second I'd add a Holley 108-70 Carburetor Heat Shield... They aren't pretty but they work & honestly it would be hidden under the shaker... Might need to trim it some but it forces heat out and around your float bowls...

I run that same heat sheild on all my builds.  They do work great.  To me, I beleive the shaker insulation would help some with air temps drown in, not really help the carb temp

Yeah, it'll keep heat from rising through the air cleaner base, but since the shaker draws fresh air from outside that's not much of an issue, heat trapped below the aircleaner cooking the float bowls causing fuel percolation is the issue he's experiencing.. I'd add the heat shield & if you need to apply some reflectix put it on the bottom of the heat shield in the exposed areas...

And block the heat cross over in the intake.... Easily accomplished by using  fel-pro part#1214

Cleaned everything with Prep-All. Held oversize sheet of Reflectix in place by hand. Pressed other hand firmly over edges which left indent and used that for cutting guide. Sprayed everything with spray adhesive and used foil tape on edges.  :D

Getting hot air out from under the hood I think would also help. Especially when say sitting in traffic. I was thinking about using a fan and building a duct to exit on one of the upper a arm access panels .

If you need to xtract air, remove the small plates in the wheel wells, right where the upper control arms are.  Trsct me, it works very well, and I dont get any extra dust in the engine compartment
