Brake line size
« on: May 24, 2005 - 07:34:27 PM »
I am just about to fabricate all new brake lines for my 74 cuda, but not sure of the size of tubing to use?
Should it be 3/16" or 1/4"  :dontknow:

Thanks Rich

where can you buy that tubing and b-nut ends? I need to do the same thing for my front brakes. Also, is the coil jacket really necessary? I guess that was installed as chafe protection or ?

Tubing and nuts are available at almost any parts store.  You can buy bulk rolls of like 20' or 25' if you want.  I looked into that but figured out by the time I bought the bulk tubing and all the nuts, I could buy the complete line almost as cheap.

Most the resto parts houses also have pre-made lines with the spiral armor already installed in carbon steel or stainless steel.

Locally here there is a hydraulic line shop that can duplicate any brake or pressure line you bring them (they have to see the line), including the spiral armor, while you wait.  They do a great job.  You might want to check around in your area for a similar company.

all the resto houses I am checking with are around $50-$60 for one line (MC to front passenger side)

Surely you can buy the material and nuts cheaper and do that yourself? Is the bulk roll of tubing with the steel spiral shroud available anywhere online?

I'm sure it is, but bulk line and spiral comes in at least 20' lengths so you will have alot left over.  25' of 3/16" is about $25 with some common nuts without armor.  I thought I saw the spiral brake line wrap somewhere, but I can't find it now.  Seems like I remember it was about the same price as the tubing.

Jim's Auto parts lists 4-piece brake line sets in mild steel for E-bodies for $59.00.  $59 bucks for 4-premade lines isn't too bad.    :)

Yeah, if the spiral wrap is not a big deal to you, the cheapest route is to get the tubing from a local parts store.  Most have assortments with nuts already installed.  Just buy a stick longer than you need with the right nuts and cut it to length and reflare it.
