The windage tray is used to keep the oil from splashing everywhere and at high rpm's not allowing the maximum amount of oil to circulate through the motor. At high rpms you may be able to see up to say 5-7hp gain from using one.

440 mild build

The windage tray decreases how much oil is dispersed out of the bottom of the oil pan by the crank. The tray is sort of like a dam that holds the oil in the pan. At higher RPMs it keeps the oil where it needs to be, in the bottom of the pan on the oil pick up sump. I've always heard that a 440 engine's Achilles heel is the oil system. This is probably why so many folks run external oil systems in drag racing applications. I'm no expert, anyone else have anything to add or correct regarding the windage tray?

I think you are interpreting HP's quote incorrectly?  Here is a picture of a windage tray installed.

You would probably get more feedback if you reposted in the Engine and Go Fast Goodies area.  :2cents:
I would buy the windage tray that is also the oil pan gasket.
Something like this, rather than two gaskets.  :2cents:

Dave at Roseville has the correct tray.  It comes with the 2 gaskets (1 for block to tray, and 1 tray to pan).  You need to drop the tie rod to take the pan off, clean the block and pan rail real good, hammer the holes from the top of the pan back down so they are flat, and use black RTV when re-installing.

IMHO every 440 should have a tray.  Most likely you will see a small performance gain, but your engine will operate more efficiently without the oil slopping all around.

Ditto what dfrazz says.

Improved oil control is always a good thing. In a mild build at street cruising rpm, you won't have a seat of the pants increase in power. It maybe will give you 5 hp. But as rpm increases, so does its effectiveness. At 6500, it may be worth 12-15 hp.

The biggest gain of the tray is it prevents the crank from pulling oil up out of the pan with the vacuum created by the rotating crank. It does not starve the  engine for oil. The screen orinetation or louvers in the tray also help catch flying oil and route it back to the pan more quickly than simply letting it fly around the crank case.

The windage tray does not starve the motor of oil but keeps it at the bottom of the tray and not splashing around the crank. Imagine at high rpms you have a small tornado of oil circulating around the crank if you do not have a windage tray. That oil needs to be at the bottom of the pan ready to be drawn by the pickup and put back into the oil passages of the motor.

So it starves the engine of oil but increases performance?  Is it worth it to use one?  My Cuda is getting painted next week and my 440 is going in asap, last min stuff....
