340 Cuda- 408/416 Stroker kit questions
« on: December 13, 2015 - 05:58:14 PM »
Hey everyone, I am looking to redo my 340 motor from my 1971 Cuda. The current bore is 4.050- Has anyone here done a stroker kit while keeping the factory heads, exhaust manifolds and intake while doing some machine work to them? I was looking to try this route to keep the look of the engine bay as original as possible. I know I will need to change the carb to add more fuel, but with the shaker hood that will not be seen. Or if anyone has any other combos that they have used, please share. I am new to this and am looking for any guidance from you guys. Thank you in advance.

You can do this, the downside is the heads & manifolds are an obvious restriction, however the upside is the engine will make gobs of torque up to maybe 3700-4200 RPM... Gear it to use the torque & have fun....  :2cents:

Really depends on your budget & location.... If your close to one of the shops that specialize in Mopar & your budget allows you might want to put it in their hands, a mistake car be costly....

Im located near Allentown pa, I see that Ray Barton is only about 45 minutes away from me. I think I am going to give them a call tomorrow. I am looking to stay around $5,000- $6,000 range if I don't buy aftermarket heads and intake-

Hi fastfish,
I'm a NEPA resident myself, I don't think you could go wrong by sending the motor to Barton. He probably won't be cheap, but you pay for what you get and that man has a considerable reputation for a reason.

There are really two important special deals when you plan to keep it stock appearing and running factory iron heads with big open chambers: Keep the static compression down around 9.5:1 which means using a dished piston; and get yourself a custom ground camshaft. I don't see you staying within the $6K budget limit using any decent shop and expecting to pick it up ready to fire. You will need the stroker parts, plus the heads completely gone through, then the custom cam, an aftermarket set of rockers, new pushrods, etc. etc. Add another $500-1000 for an un-fired combo depending on the cam choice, and another $1K on top of that if you want it warranteed and dyno'd (I would recommend that).

Thank you moper- I figured $6,000 might be out of the question- Hopefully no more than $8,000-  Thank you for all your advice. Can't wait to get it done.

Went down to see ray before xmas. He has an amazing shop and cool cars there. After talking over with him and seeing his shop he is going to do the build from start to finish. I am very pleased with making that move. It's alittle more than I was hoping it would be, but I feel like it is worth it.

My suggestion is if you want to use stock heads use 308 castings as they will seriously out flow the X or J castings  :2cents:
