Need opinions on 5.7hemi swap
« on: May 24, 2016 - 12:27:00 AM »
Ok, so I am swapping a 5.7 545RFE into my 1979 W100. My issue is deciding on EMS/Trans controller. EFI Source makes a great standalone G3 setup for a very reasonable price, but I would have to source trans controller from PCS to make it all work. Overall cost would be $ 2500, which is great because I can later tune everything as needed. Or go to Hotwire Auto have the 2004 comp de-securitised, get the harness, however I cannot retune without using a fast PNP on it, and cost would be about $1600 w/out fast piggyback, which I will find cost for shortly (700), so roughly $2300. Or option 3 EFI source G3 with a 518OD, but I will half to get a new stall converter, which my 545 cores for about $600 around here, so it would pay for a 518OD and some hop up parts, but it's a 4 speed vs 5 speed with 2 2nd gears (6 speed really). Which option would you go with.

Not my truck: I would probably go for option 1 though. I have not dealt with such a setup though.

 :iagree:
1 seems like the best route similar cost with the ability to retune . but if it works option 2 is 200 cheaper with the same result right , just more hassle sending the computer away  ?
or option 3 seems like the worst choice , you have to buy everything new , sell what you have & get less but maybe the cost would be much lower .
Not my $$ to spend though

Option one was my first thought, only draw back I have found to 545 RFE is the input torque rating is lower than the A518, but 545rfe is in front of new hemi versus old school 360 and stock for stock no real comparison in output between the two.

Maybe I should add that I will be occasionally running truck pulls in Stock class. My gearing is 3.91 with a 33×12.5 inch tire. This is my only hang-up with the 545rfe trans is that it is rated lower and has less overall  hop up parts available; I could get an entire monster in a box kit thou, if it did end up being a weak link.
Thoughts??

Well the true cost of the 545 RFE has come to light, I think I can make the mopar factory harness and computer work, but I will need to run a NV273 transfer case. So cost to wipe the comp and retune is 300, transfer case is anywhere from 750-1500 unless I find a wrecked 3/4 ton at a local yard. I will then need custom drive shafts. So, figure another 500, for a grand total of 900 to a max of 2300 depending on parts availability.
