Muscle Motors is about $3,500 for 9.5:1 stock parts shortblock. Anyone else do better than that?

Maybe try Carolina Machine Engines. They are very professional at a decent price with excellent customer service as well.

Depending on the shop, the parts, and the core (like do you need one) I would think $3K is reasonable for decent pistons, internal balancing, and high quality machining, with exchange of a usable core. Muscle Motors is in the ballpark IMO if they are not including the exchange. Short blocks I do are usually around $3200 plus the core depending on the piston and ring choices.

I agree  3000-3500 is a reasonable price and unless you are building a 1000HP car, should be sufficient as well.
