Rear end trouble
« on: November 20, 2015 - 09:10:38 PM »
E-body copper wanted me to post this. It's a pic of what he found when when he opened up his rear end. Kinda ugly.

How can anyone check for it ? Is there a noise that tell you that your differential is way past its limits?

Hard to check without pulling it but excessive pinion rotation & clunk going into gear or forward to reverse

Your symptoms evaluation was "bang on".  (pun intended) It did clunk pretty hard when it was moved into drive or reverse.  :clueless:

Nice! Nothing like a cross shaft with an oblong hole for it! Look at the bright side Doug, now you can replace the ole peg leg with a nice SG and those 3:55's you mentioned and have a chance at beating Murray, like you said! By doing so, you'll save the thousands of dollars it would've cost if it'd failed- and that's the story I'd be telling the old lady if I were you! Just sayin'.   Good to see you two today. Ian

I wonder if one could machine it for a bushing to repair it?  :dunno:  I'd guess once it was apart it would be "ugly" inside? ....And if it's not a useable sure grip why bother?

Haha thanks Ian.  Good to see you again also.  By the way, my wife is reading this as I respond.   :dupe:   Just refresh my memory,  I referred to her as a "young chick" and not an "old lady" didn't I?  Your response could mean the difference between a new rear end  vs a kick in the rear end! :roflsmiley:

No Doug, you didn't refer to her as a "young chick", you referred to her as "the beautiful, kind, understanding and generous woman I married"- get it right!  ;)
