Ideas for cleaning up underside of car
« on: December 21, 2015 - 07:35:14 PM »
What have you guys done to clean up the underside of your car to make it looks presentable?  I'm not talking about putting it on a rotisserie but when the car is already a roller or driver?  I'm looking for idea's on how to clean it up.  The bodyshop who is doing my car is starting to go over on their original estimate and I think I might have them drop doing the bottom of the car with undercoat and maybe do something myself when the car gets back to save some money.

Just looking to see if their is a way to make the bottom look clean without breaking the bank.

-Thanks

I've been applying Rust Bullet to my car's underside.  Definitely a bit of work (1 round to the ear rust and the 2 separate coats brush applied) and not a lot of fun to do laying on your back but the results so far look great.  No road time on it yet, so I can speak to durability.  I'd attach a picture but all you'd see is shiny black.

If you're not going to "do" the bottom, as in scrape, clean, grind and sand and paint as req'd- I'd put it on a hoist or lift, power wash it clean, let it dry very well and then get the truck box liner guys to squirt it. That'll kill several birds, it'll make it all nicely one colour, seal it, quieten it and make it resistant to stone chipping. I'd make sure I had all the brake/fuel line work done before I did it as well. Just my  :2cents:

I did it myself with a kit that included a spray gun after power washing on a lift.  It was very easy.

Depending on how bad the underside is, or weather or not it has factory undercoating on it should help you decide on which way to go.  I used an industrial steam cleaner, the hot steam and pressure blasted the undercoating away. I then went at it with wire brushes and plastic scrapers. Once I was satisfied with the clean up I wiped it down with wax and grease remover.
Personally I didn't want  the rubberized under coated look, so I used Eastwood Chassis Black, it has been three years and the underside still looks good.

Good luck with either methods you choose.....and yes you can do it!
