I think Momma & I might be crazy
« on: May 14, 2016 - 02:16:11 AM »
We bought our house ten years ago, it was nice in a decent neighborhood & through the past ten years we've really got it fixed up just how we want it... But in the past ten years the neighborhood has really taken a dive, we have drug dealers three doors down, four months ago a rival dealer from four blocks away, pulled a drive by shooting... We have chased homeless druggies out of our stand of sequoias, anyway, the market is strong right now & we have a chance to sell & move to a much better neighborhood,
so we would leave the nicest house in our neighborhood & move to a house that needs some work in one of the best neighborhoods in the area & pay more to do it... But no more gangsta idiots & since we are good at improving our home we'll be increasing the value of the cheapest house rather than further maxing out the nicest house in the neighborhood.... All sounds good but ten years ago I had more energy for doing all the hard work... We have our current place dialed but....  Scary stuff..

Wow. I live in a rural area so I never see the neighborhood 'shift' so to speak. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy shooting, but if I was living in an area where people felt the need to do drive bys, I would want out. If the market is still strong and can get a good deal for your house, I'd count myself lucky and take the $ and move.  :2cents:

:iagree:  go for it! When we got our first home it was in a townhouse complex . We too had drug dealers, prostitutes.....etc... after 5 years we were glad to get out. Never had any shooting though!

you and Momma are not crazy at all. The neighborhood you're in will continue to dive downhill and eventually you won't be able to give your place away. Good luck going forward.

Sounds about right, that's exactly what happened to my old neighborhood in Cali, started nice and took a dive.  Get out while you can man.  Just curious, I saw it says ur in central California, what part of u don't mind me asking?  I was born and raised on the central coast, but lived about every where between there and san Diego haha and a wee bit in NorCal too

Leave now with your lives, sanity and property values. I built 14yrs ago, biggest house on the street as it was a great pie lot. Smaller homes around. Those people moved on but didn't sell their homes, there are lots of rentals around me now which brings extra parking and feeling less secure with your belongings. Next time I want the cheapest house in the expensive neighbor hood.

I hope you enjoy your new digs !

Take your money and your mopar and run, life is too short.  I myself went thru the same issues with the fall of a neighborhood.     3 doors  up selling heroin neighbor selling pills.  (New Jersey has huge issue with this)

But unlike you moving is not and option unless I can come up with 50 k .

A huge oak tree fell on the heroin house and destroyed  it.     So it's been a good spring but the street is still not what it was when I bought on it 13 years ago.

Life is to short  take care of your family...

If you would like to chat  pm me .  I'm full of vigilante  tactics that worked a little to get rid of e junkies lol...

I think your crazy not to move, you know your gut feeling is telling you to do it. Only bummer is higher sales higher property taxes. And your last sentence is reality, your not 21 any more and don't get near the amount of work done as when you were younger. Good luck!

Add my name to the long litany of those saying "get out while the getting is good". Be safe and enjoy the new neighbourhood. Besides, the new guys probably haven't seen a nice car like yours and you may make some new friends asap!

Well, it appears everyone thinks the same way about this.... Just a little more info to explain why we are having such a hard time with this..

Current house is on a good sized lot close to a third of an acre, I have a 600 sq ft shop, 4 car garage, covered RV parking, an 8 foot block wall around the whole back area & a beautiful 3 bd 2 bath home with full hardwood floors, plantation shutters, big walk-in closets, all the landscaping dialed in.. And on & on...

New house, two car garage, small lot in the front nicely landscaped, good sized rear lot but no access from the front, fact is I can't even get a bobcat back there for landscaping the barren ground unless after I move in I'm able to get access through a neighbors yard...  Bathrooms are both in need of a lot of work, kitchen needs everything...  Floors are a hodge lodge of wood, tile & carpet, small closets,

EDIT but it is surrounded by lots of million dollar plus homes.......

I'm going to be in the same boat in 4 years when I retire our TOWN is going to chit more every year from leaches and low lifes moving here. I'm worried just about selling by that time even in my nice neighborhood . I'm on a pie shaped lot also on the end of the street and is why I bought it. I have spent countless time and money on my house in the last 8 years and almost have it where I want it. I want to move farther south from Iowa to Tennessee where the cost of living is cheaper. I'm really getting too old to start another project also and want to do other things with my money and time than work on another house to have it the way I like it by the time I croak. I will have no trouble selling my house if there is still a market here because it is in one of the nicest locations in town. If I were you I would move while the getting is good, I think your last sentence says it all. I wish you good luck with your decision.  :2thumbs:
