I forgot about this until now....
Back in about 1983, I had the rearend in my Duster swapped from the stock 7 1/4 2.79 to B-Body 8 3/4 with 5.13 gears! No that's no typo! 5.13's!!!
I had a built up 318 and had been bracket racing at the local track. At our high altitude the car ran 15's flat.
Anyways, I was working at an Oil Co. as a draftsman at the time and I told a co-worker all about the car and how I changed the rearend, went racing on the weekend, blah, blah, blah! I shot my mouth off! He had an 82 or 83 C a m a r o and was proud of it! I just couldn't help myself!
That was Monday, on Tuesday, he and I went to a local Triple A baseball game after work, basically across the street from me.
Stupid and young, we drank one large beer for every inning. Doh!
We continued to talk cars the whole game, and me and my big mouth.....told him he could have a ride in the Duster after the game.......
So...here we are! Sitting at a red light in the right lane.
My Duster was bright red at the time and still had my car number and dial in time in white shoe polish on the front, side and rear windows!
I'm yakking my face off to him in the passenger seat and didn't notice a Cop Car pull up to light in the left lane! Double Doh!!
I looked back at the light, just in time to see it turn green!!!!!
Instantly, My right foot mashed the loud pedal to the floor!
After a Good 1/4 mi. or more...I let up and slowed enough to take a right hander to circle back to my place.
I looked in the rearview mirror and see red and blue lights way back there! Not sure if they were after me, and I had slowed down, I did another right hander and then they were on me!
I pull over and shut off. The Cop calls out to us to get out of the car slowly. Bright lights are upon us, as we exit the car. We were thrown onto the trunk of my car and frisked. I figured, I was done for and waited for the handcuffs. What? they just threw us both in the rear seat of the Cop Car and interrogated us! My friend was let off, but I was asked how much I had to drink that night! GULP! I knew I couldn't say 2, and would be hooped if I said 9. I picked 5 and then the two cops started arguing in code! The older cop said, He's a 1023 and the younger one said no he's a 1024, or something like that. They actually argued about it!
Finally the younger cop says, do you realize it took us 6 blocks to catch up to you? What were you doing? Showing off yer car???
I couldn't help it and burst out laughing, about the 6 blocks remark, to which the older cop started laughing too!
What finally happened???
I was ordered to lock the car up and walk home! They followed slowly as my friend and I walked about 4 blocks.
Had to get up extra early the next morning to walk back and get my car!
This is not my personality today of course, and I still can't believe what happened that night. What a nightmare, but could have been much worse of course.
