WIW: 69 Barracuda Formula S
« on: November 24, 2015 - 05:39:35 PM »
Stumbled upon a 69 Barracuda Formula S car earlier this week and the owner is looking to sell. He didn't give me a price and asked me what I thought it was worth. I had no idea what to offer him. The car is white with blue interior, numbers matching motor, and in excellent shape. Its also fairly well optioned with a/c, power brakes, center console, tinted glass, auto trans. Only visible rust issue were the lower rear quarters. Any suggestions?

I like it too! Been thinking about going the A-body route myself. I'm not sure that it is a "Formula S"? Looks more like a "Cuda 340" package car to me. Minor differences between the two but the fender tag would have A53 for the Formula S package or A56 for the Cuda 340 package. Looks relatively complete, but needing a little work, so I'm going to say around $12-$13,000.  :dunno:  I'm interested to see how this one goes ...

$7,000 would be stretching it.  Significant engine bay hackery and rust, missing important parts like AC and exhaust manifolds, and restored to perfection it would still be a sub-$30K car.  I love the A-body Barracudas, but they're just not that valuable with an original engine smaller than 7 liters.  Don't hate on me, that's just the nature of the A-body game.

The next time I talked to him I'd show him 55 Benjamins in cash, and I'd walk away smiling regardless of his decision.  :2cents:

I'm thinking about the a body route myself!

Not sure about price but the pictures are also really bad to give an accurate description I think. Could it be pressure washed and driven as is?

For an a body Barracuda I love the looks of this one. White with dog dish caps and a blue interior is sweet.

I'm thinking @ $4-8K depending on final inspection and condition. this is the last year of that body style and does decent at market with the right combo, and this one has a good drivetrain and color combo (yeah, it's not a BB, but the 340s hold their own on pricing). I personally love this one - Formula S, 340, Auto, white with blue interior and plain jane rims. it would be a fun daily driver. love it

And these estimates are why I said I have no idea of pricing... Personally I'd pay more cause I like it... I know some of the parts are crazy $$$, plenty of parts aren't reproduced.. And as much as I like the fastback Cuda's for some reason the value has never followed.. They seem weak even compared to other A bodies...

Hmmm? I seem to be the only one that went high ... perhaps my estimate is way off? :dunno:

I have been looking at more and more of these lately, and the ones I am seeing in the $5K-$8K range are mostly dinged up 318 cars. The codes on the fender tag (for some odd reason the exterior color "W1" is stamped twice - but other than that it looks legit) indicate that this is a real Formula S 340 car with the Deluxe Interior (A86) and air conditioning (H51) - what's not to like about that? It looks more to me like it is just really dirty from sitting all this time versus being a corroded rust-bucket. And if the original driveline is still in it, I think it would be worth more than $5K-$8K. If it is still mostly original and all there, this car has a lot of potential. :2thumbs:

With the junk I have been looking at lately, I wouldn't mind putting this one in my garage from what I see so far. Turbo, let me know where you go with this one okay? Thanks!

No: I'd pay $8k for that car. I didn't respond with an estimate because I really like fastback 340 cars and I thought my emotional attachment would skew my estimate. I follow these cars a bit and agree that I see 318 clunkers at higher asking prices than $5 or $6k, it just doesn't buy you much. If a person was buying one of these cars he would be crazy not to pay $8k or more for a complete 340 car in what looks to be decent condition.
