Seam sealer question
« on: January 12, 2016 - 08:03:21 PM »
In the process of firewall, cowl, A pilars etc replacement. During disassembly I noticed seam sealer between panel flanges. When I plug weld this all back together if I put seam sealer how will it affect my weld and will it just burn out of there(ie catch fire) pic is to show where sealer was on A piler

I'd think that migging it would burn it too much. When we changed the cowl/firewall on my Challenger, we used panel bond and then resistance spot welded it while it was still wet. I've heard some shop guys say that if you try to spot weld it when it's dried, it explodes; not insanely, but it goes bang and flies out. Hope that helps.

You know, you could do it in a hybrid fashion- panel bond the majority and put a few mig spots in at the corners. That's what most shops do when changing a roof skin these days. Food for thought.
