Lakewood Bellhousing ball stud
« on: February 06, 2016 - 03:26:04 PM »
I seem to be having a parts problem with my Z-Bar setup on my Lakewood bellhousing (Big Block).  The ball stud that screws into the bellhousing bracket snapped the other day.  Being the dumbo that I am, I ordered the original style ball stud, which turns out to be way to big to screw into the bellhousing bracket.  It turns out the ball stud that was used has a 1/2" thread, and is about 2-1/2" long, where the new one I ordered has a 5/8" thread, and is about 2-7/8" long.  Does anyone have any idea what ball stud I need to get to replace the one that broke?  Here's a coupe pic of the 2 side by side.

The old one is pretty badly distorted from snapping, and from me having to get the pieces out.  I just figured that since the mounting bracket on the Lakewood (Bolt in) is different from the standard Mopar bellhousing (Screw in), that there would be a specific part for that ball stud.

I ordered the bellhousing side stud from Passon, which is the one in the picture above that is way too big for the bracket on the Lakewood.  Out of curiosity I tried the frame side stud that I pulled off, and it too would be too big.  It has the same thread size as the new one.

I'm thinking that might be the best option, but unfortunately I don't see any way to do that without pulling the transmission due to a lack of space to drill out the bigger hole. The new stud is also close to a half inch longer, so it might also include cutting down the torque shaft if it shifts the alignment. I'll make a couple calls on Monday and hopefully get some more info.

Well, I spoke with Jamie at Passon this morning, and it looks like the bellhousing bracket might have been previously modified to work with the stud that was on there, as opposed to the correct replacement stud.  I guess I'll have to figure out how to adapt the new one to work with the current setup.

That thought had crossed my mind. What's a good kit out there?  I haven't done much research on them.

Looks like I got it taken care of.  It turns out the Lakewood housings do work with the stock ball studs.  I just ran a 9/16" tap through the hole, and cleaned up the threads, and it screwed right in.  The alignment is not perfect, but I have read that the Lakewood housing brackets were not lined up properly to begin with.
