under dash wiring
« on: February 22, 2016 - 01:21:22 PM »
all,
I was checking the fuse panel fuses to see what is hot all the time vs what is hot for accessory.  what I found is that I have to turn my key all the way to on otherwise there really is no accessory, I think the yellow mold is the same but I would have to check that again to say for sure.  is this correct or is my ignition switch going out?

There should be something hot down there. I recently added 2 distribution blocks on my 70 Challenger; one for constant power and one for switched power. The constant power is coming from my battery cut off switch, so that doesn't help you, but like I said, I am very sure there is a hot lead down there, like for the cigarette lighter, that should be on all the time.

Yes. One side of the fuse panel is constant hot "bat" and the other side is switched "accy".

There are plenty of always hot circuits.  I'm wondering why none of them are the first key position of Accessory.  I have to turn the key fully to on to get a couple of them to go "hot".  when in the on position, it's basically where the key returns to after starting.  if you turn it 2 clicks, the oil light and possibly parking brake light would come on.  Thats how far I would have to go to get accessory power.

Try turning your key backwards, past where it comes out of the column. That should be  the accessory position.

HMM.  That makes perfect sense.  I will try that.  If that is the case, I'm a complete idiot.

No not at all...we have all made that mistake...well not me.. but lots of folks.

I have a  buddy that scored a great deal on a 69 vette partly because the owner was having an issue with the battery always dieing.  Took my buddy a month or so to figure our the key was so worn out that it was coming out in the Acc position and not the off position. Acc in the vettes is also all the way back.

WINNER!  I As you all suspected, I do have accessory, in the back position.  I was thinking it's like a modern car.  Mystery solved.

Thanks Fellas
