Diving into my '70 Six Pack: First impressions and questions
« on: June 12, 2005 - 07:40:49 PM »
Guys,

Today I started cleaning off the interior junk in the '70 six pack I brought home last week. I took some more pictures of the body and interior.

Some serious points came up that I will need to address. I was able to push the stepped upon roof back up almost intact, but there are 2 small dimples, that could probaly be knocked out, but the question still looms on the roof replacement due to weakened metal. If you see the pictures, there is some rust at the seams.

Most ironically there is a night and day difference between the drivers' and passenger side floor pans. Probaly because the prior owner left the side quarter window down storing the car outdoors thinking that was the best way to vent the car.   There are some pinhole rust holes under the driver's side pedals. The seat area doesn't look too bad, but some crusty areas. My question is, how bad do floors have to be in order to salvage/cut them out? Crusty surfaces? I don't want to deal with weakened metal after media blasting the body. Any thoughts?

The trunk rust looks to be isolated mostly towards the back closest to the edge of the car. Am I being a little too pessimistic on the rust situation, given there have been many a Mopar with far worse rust that were repaired easily?

Looks like: Replace drivers side floors, trunk floor, probably roof. Front left fender looks a bit dented, not sure if I can save that one. We'll see.

The second (spare) block stampings show up as F440 V 11 26 2, and 70-27-69 2336430 D N and 0C174207 Any ideas on its specs?

I have posted a pic of the seats, are these correct for '70?

Here's on to the pictures, as I know you all like that....

You need to make these pics smaller to gain perspective...but from what i can see I'd say unless you are going for a concours resto, I'd leave the trunk floor and interior floors alone. The roof panel is another matter..looks like a donor panel is needed from my perspective. Really need to see smaller pics to gain a better perspective on the condition from my point of view.

The car is very solid and shouldnt be a hard restoration. You can replace the floor pans if you want, but from the pictures they look fine. The trunk pan looks like it will need to be replaced, but that isnt a huge problem. The fender that is shown looks like its not that bad and can probably be repaired. You do not have to replace the roof just because the metal is weak. If the car was a hardtop I would say to replace it, but since it has a vinyl top just shrink the metal and fill it in with lead/chromate. With a couple hours of shrinking, the roof will be stronger that stock and the vinyl top will hide any imperfections. Overall, the car looks like a typical restoration, far from a basket case.

Here's a pic of the left fender, the one I stated was dented, along the midpoint of the fenderwell. Can this be saved?

Hemi71, sorry about the size, they look just right on my 1600x1200 20" screen. I'll go ahead and downsize.

The concept of metal strengthening is relatively new to me. In the past, I would have assumed that once it had rust holes, it had to be pieced out. So, the same treatment procedure would apply to the floors as Killer Mopar suggested for the roof? Molten brass to fill in the tiny rust holes, hmm?

Media blasting should get everything the way it should be, and then I can reassess what metalwork I have in front of me.

From the pics that I see, the floor doesn't look terrible. You could wirebrush it down and POR-15 it, or put in a patch for the small holes, or replace the whole pan. Your decision, and your budget.

my floors looked just like that and i used por 15.  the metal ready that comes with their kit just dissolves the rust.  all that brown surface rust changed to shiny metal.  then just paint over and you're done.  thats absolutely what i would do to those floors and then just be done with it.  looks like that will be a great car when you're done with it!  good luck.

The car does look pretty darn solid actually, the only nasty area out of the norm may be the roof ? Besides man, you got a dana
