Dougs, for 2 reasons.  Military budget , family, and I know you all to well.
1 3/4 because you have a 383 , no big cam, so no big rpms. And better on your wallet, plus easier to install for you.

How's that :icon16:

That's awesome Al. Missed hearing from you.

I am building a 496 stroker. I've got the stealth heads...but you're right, I'm still a baby bird.

Ok, what cam Drew?  What gears Drew? Carb n Intake?   Super stealth, or stealth cnc done?  Either way, stealths will not give you much more HP over 650 or so, if your lucky.  Dougs with 1 7/8 with help and still be down on price to.  You need to keep the rpms under 6200 , especially with 3/8 pickup tube. 496 cube is just a fancy number. Just about any cube you choose will give you more HP than your suspension as of now will handle.  Choosing a good cam for you would be something like a 2800/ 5800 rpm range.  Trust me, you will be beat by someone. Everybody looses. The fun part is in the build and driving. Smaller lift cams are easier on valve guides, springs , and cam itself. You chose a medium tq monster. Don't take any food off the table. I don't want you walking way out in my yard chatting with your wife in private. Family first. You have all the time in the world to do your project. Just don't base it on engine alone. It will have you chasing dreams and broken parts.

I have not been on here much... i'm sorry. The docs thought my stroke and continuos mini strokes was due to plaque coming of my veins above my right temple. The 30th I go in for some type of cut through my skull for a biopsy , they think I have a tumor getting bigger and putting pressure on my dumb head.

Thanks Al, I can't find dougs 1 7/8. Only the 3/4. The cam will be close to .500. Intake is a perf rpm and a 750 cfm carb. The heads are stealths with some bowl work. I know I'll be beatable but just want enough to win sometimes. Right now I feel like I'm at the back of the pack

I hope the docs figure it out and make you feel better. That is some worrisome stuff. Fingers crossed

Carb is to small for cubes. It would melt your headers by running way lean.  The cam is small for that cube engine. It will idle better and smoother than you may not want for that 496

Would it still be lean at this altitude?

I may have to go bigger on the cam

I am building a 496 stroker.

Is that a B based stroker engine from the 383 in your car?

Or are you going to do a RB stroker?

The reason I ask:  The parts combo you listed sounds like the making of an awesome B-based 451 or a RB 440.  I'm not an expert like Alan or Neil, but if you already have those parts why not look towards those cubes and save a crap load of money not reinventing the wheel.

Also.... take your budget and time for this type of build and $ x 2 and you will be right on target for price and time.  Just be ready to spend some big boy money.  The first time I ran out of money, I sat there thinking how the "F" am I going to find the rest and where am I going to put my car being stuck in Hawaii.  It was very sobering.

Wish you the best bro!  Keep us posted.

I would go with the 1-3/4 headers and save money.  That extra tube isn't going to be worth the extra cash and you most likely wouldn't notice the difference in performance.

Don

Hey Don,

It is a 383 B block with the 440 source kit that makes the 496. I got the headers in a couple weeks ago and love them. They really opened things up along with the x pipe system I put in. I have the spare 383 block sitting in the garage but it is all getting put on the back burner for another year or so due to upcoming employment changes  :icon16: I am adding a sure grip to my list of mods when I finally get moving on it
