1970 Alternator Hook Up
« on: May 18, 2016 - 05:41:48 PM »
I bought a new alternator and when I went to hook it up I find it has only two terminals, BATT and FLD .   the GND one isn't there but the screw looks insulated.

Do I just put a terminal on GND  and  hook it up or leave that wire off and forget it?

This is on a new build with a mopar performance regulator and a new M&H harness  if it matters.

If you can post a pic:

you  need  fld + and fld-  and batt.    The system gets ground reference thru the voltages regs chassis ground

( if you have a 70 and up voltage regulator ..........)****************

Maybe they possibly left off the ring terminal with the male tab for you to connect ...

Just a guess  without seeing it ...

sounds like you have the 69 with the heart shaped back , the power to the field is regulated & the ground is to the alt body
in 70 the field ground is regulated with much less load so the field has power in & ground out to hte reg

Yes it's the old style , but that's what the book says it should be.     do I need the newer one with the square holes in the back?    I see it does have 3  terminals.

The Hear shaped back is corret for 70 but has the 3 terminals , if you do not are what year you use the square back will work & are much easier to find
