what is the best tool you use to move the drive gear under the distributor when you need to set the distributor to TDC?

I think by removing the distributor and turning the crank to tdc on number 1 then installing the distrib is what you want to do.

Maybe I'm not understanding correctly but are you talking about the distrib gear?

Just use a large std screwdriver & twist the drive gear up cw or ccw depending which engine you have

I wouldn't do that with a bronze gear

What Chryco said is how it's done. The slot in the middle is pretty much just for doing that...

Thanks everyone.  That is what I thought but wanted to double check since a friend of mine was doubting what I was telling him.

:clueless: I always set the motor to TDC on number 1 and then install the distributor.

But yeah ref the pic. Either you are right or you are 180 degrees out.

If the gears are meshed with the cam it won't turn - you will need to pull it up and reset.
