    Woodgrain Instrument Panel--Differences by Year and Model

    (1) Did the woodgrain color/finish change in certain years...like is 1970 different from 1971-74? (2) Over on the left instrument panel side, did the format of the switch labels change based on year or model?  I've seen some with little black label appliques below each individual switch and some with a central little plaque identifying each switch. Thanks from a Newbie.

    #1, The color shouldn't have changed. I've seen many cars where the switch panel woodgrain looked a little different than the gauges. I'm not sure why.

    #2, I'm not sure what you are asking. :-[ I think in either 72, or definitely by 73, they started putting little pictures of the wipers, lights, etc. I guess this was for people who could drive, but not read???   :laughing: :laughing: :laughing: Anyway, in all years the wording was there.

    I had three woodgrain inserts for the console in the barn and one is definitely darker that the others but I don't know any statistics.  Good question!!

    Thanks for the info.  Here's a description of the two "switch label" versions I have seen.  For coupes there is a little black label under each switch.  But then I saw a Gran Coupe Convertible, which had an added power top switch, and instead of little black labels under each switch there was a central plaque in-between all four switches which had labels on it. Maybe this is unique to the Gran Coupe Vert...or maybe the plaque version applies to all power top Verts. You can see the "central plaque" version on Ebay now...just type in the Search box the item number 4555513042.

    OK,
      I see where we might have had a difference here... I was assuming you were talking about Rally gauges, but there were some standard gauges that came with woodgrain. the Grand Coupe would be one of those that would have. Sorry if I confused you.

    That's an angle I didn't consider. You're right...there were some woodgrain packages with standard gauges.  Maybe that explains it. Does a rally gauge convertible with power top have the little black labels under all the switches (including power top switch)?

    I don't know about the labels but adding to the conjecture, why is it that 95% of the rallye dashes you see out there have mismatched grain on the LH switch panel?

    Another good question.  I am going to Chrysler/Carlisle next month to absorb as much as I can about 70-71 Cuda/Challenger. I'll report back after seeing so many original cars with my own eyes and asking the experts....

    the switches were labeled differently in 70 , the ones with the black retangular background were later 71 - up
     the std dash switch panel will not interchange with the ralley dash panel there are a very different depth
     the early 70 std dashes had vertical ribs

    I just think it's piss poor quality control.
