LD340 Intake Question - HELP
« on: May 30, 2016 - 09:35:36 PM »
Hey Guys,

I have a 2 questions.  I'm in the middle of getting ready to paint the engine.  It's a 340 and I purchased an LD340 had it powder coated and I went to put it on to mark where I need to paint and it doesn't seem to fit.  I'm not sure what's the difference here?  I purchased the motor which was running great with the old original intake which is lone gone.  That was a couple of years ago.  My questions are:

1.  Why doesn't it fit or does it?  It seems to have some of the ports in the center of the heads exposed which I took a picture of.  Does this look right?  This is my first 340 so I'm not certain.

2.  In two of the pictures there seems to be a small roll pin sticking out of the block not allowing the intake to seat properly.  What are they for?  I figured maybe locating pins for the old intake.

Anything you got is greatly appreciated.  Thanks

Dave

The roll pins hold the gaskets in place and YES those open ports are correct. Everything you've got going on looks correct.

Can I remove the roll pins since the I will be using  the Right Stuff on the ends as gaskets?

Also Why the exposed head like that?

Thanks

Pull the roll pins or drill recesses in the intake so it can seat fully...

The openings around the heat crossover allow air to cool the exhaust so it doesn't cook the oil....  Look at a heat crossover on a Ford & it'll be caked with cooked oil, Mopars don't do that because theres air space between the exhaust & the oil...

I usually drill a small hole in the intake rail for the roll pin to sit in but you an remove them also.

I already removed them.  I will be using the Right Stuff as the end gaskets.  I was used to chevy small blocks where the intake took up all of the head space when the intake was installed.  That's why I thought it looked weird.  I'm new to Mopars so I'm still learning.  I was hoping is was ok since I had the intake powder coated and it turned out so well.

Yea, I really like the look of the powder coating. I have an aluminum diff cover I'm going to get done :2thumbs:

FYI
The divider in the opening of your manifold has been removed. Most I've seen only partially remove it.
It's a common mod to make HP into higher RPM range.
Mine with it only partially removed made peak HP at 5700 RPM on the engine dyno. All the way gone may add a few more HP up to 6000 RPM? Depending on your setup. :dunno:

They came like this one new. Credit google for the picture.

Ok, now you're getting really technical on me. How does removing the divider give you more HP at higher RPM?  :clueless:

It's a slightly modified 340.  I'm changing over the car to a shaker and in my research the LD340 is the one that will fit best with the shaker and not be too much or too little of a gap.  I would rather have to add a spacer than to figure out an alternative.

Is it going to make that much of a difference with the center cut out?

Dual Plane manifolds are designed for better low-mid range and single planes for higher range RPMs.
Removing the divider moves the power band higher by making it act a little more like a single plane intake.

You could lose a little torque  in the bottom end and gain a little HP at the top end. Again, it all depends on everything working together. Carb, Intake, Heads, Cam, Headers/Manifolds...
There are quite a few known combinations that will work depending on what you want it to do. I just told my engine builder what I wanted and he exceeded my expectations.

We put several different size spacers on my stroked 340 [418 C.I.] on the Dyno. My engine did not like any of them... it made less power and less torque with every one of them.

Removing the dividing wall allows any cylinder to pull A/F from both sides of the carb so it raises the rpm range

FYI , The LD340 is taller than the stock manifold . When I installed the LD340 on my Cuda with shaker hood the hood would bend slightly in the middle due to the taller manifold . I also used an old Edelbrock Tarantula manifold and didn't have this issue .
