Bigger the better?
« on: June 11, 2016 - 09:06:45 PM »
New Car Craft mag, article on carbs.  Comet drag car, 351 Windsor stroked to 425 cu in.
runs low 7s in eight mile, with automatic and 3.91 rear gears.
Tested 3 carbs, 650, 750, and 850.
850 make most power, 423hp, while 650 made 409hp.
At track, fastest times and top speeds in eight mile were
made with the 650 DP.
650 - 7.01sec, 95 mph
750 - 7.04 sec, 94mph
850 - 7.25sec, 89 mph
72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"

I think the smaller carb will create more Torque....at the bottom end

also, most say a smaller carb will give better throttle response.
If you are at 3000 rpm, and stab the throttle, a smaller carb
is going to move you quicker/faster. That's why I stay with an 850 DP with
annular boosters, rather than a 950. If I drag raced in the 1/4 mile, and kept
rpms up around 6000, then a 950 would probably be better. Annular
boosters also give better throttle response.
