Alternator wiring on 71
« on: June 19, 2016 - 04:18:32 AM »
Anyone have a picture (hard to tell from wiring diagram) of which wires go to which FLD terminals on the alternator?  On 71 Cudas, there is a dark green and a dark blue wire.  Thx.

One in & one out , it doesn't matter which wire goes to which terminal though , usually the green wire is a bit shorter though

Okay, makes sense.  And there should only be one wire per terminal, not two wires going to one terminal, correct?  Reason I am asking is that on my car, for one of the terminals, there are two wires going to it.  I need to peal back the tape and see where it goes.  It could be spliced some where.  And it doesn't help that one of the two wires looks like it melted exposing bare wire as you peal back the tape.  My guess is that it melted and another wire was added next to it and not replaced...not a good way to do it.

a second wire tied into the blue wire would be a 12v feed , this works well for electric chokes etc & will not cause a problem

I traced the second wire (black colored) that was attached at the connector along with the blue wire that connects to the alternator terminal (field).  The wire goes to a small box (tan colored) attached to the vacuum advance on the distributor.  Any idea what it might be?

I then traced the damage of the blue wire and it went beyond the electronic regulator and the resistor.  Luckily the wires going to the regulator and resistor were fine.  I am thinking there was bare wire that shorted out the wire at some point.  Anyways, going to replace the bad wire with a new strip.
