    so is it better to have a one wire alternator, with an internal voltage regulator?

    72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

    1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"

    The answer depends how you define "better".
    This solution WILL WORK, and be robust !!!..there will be wires "left over" in your el.system do you care ?... I don't....

    More importantly, our weak links are the bulkhead connectors.
    If you perform a search, you will find info on bypassing the   amp meter , which indeed is a smart move.
    Also replace amp meter with Volt meter can ealisy (and cheaply) be done for people who are not ALL ORIGINAL DIE HARDS.

    The problem with a 1 wire setup is where you reference the system voltage.  You could connect the "sense" wire directly to the output stud on the alternator.  However, that doesn't take into account any voltage drop in the wiring and can give a false reading.  The "sense" wire should be connected to the battery or the stud on the starter relay.   This way, it is sensing actual battery voltage.

    what chryco said...     One wire is fine..as long as it works...    The "Oldfashioned " alternator is my favorite..
