No Ignition Start
« on: June 26, 2016 - 11:07:49 AM »
I was having a problem with ignition start, about every third time I tried to start the car there was no start on the key.The car has been working fine other than the intermittent start problem for about a year.  Replaced ignition switch with a new one now I having no start at all. When I turn on the signal light the engine will fire. also with the key in the run position, using a test light grounded to the dash chassis and probing the yellow wire at the harness connector, it will start every time. Had another steering column already rebuilt with original switches, put that in, still nothing. Obviously a ground problem, checked all engine grounds and starter relay grounds still nothing. The car has a standard transmission and the switch on the trans has been bypassed. If anyone has had a problem similar to this any help would be greatly appreciated.

Where is the brown wire from the start relay going to now , in factory 4 speed cars it will ground to the clutch pedal through the firewall

I think you may have solved my problem, the 4 speed is not original, was automatic, the brown wire from the relay goes directly to the starter solenoid, When I pilled on the wire to make sure of the direction it took and then hit the key, it started, then no go on the second wiggle of the wire, but a start on the third attempt. Must be shorted wire or loose on the solenoid, I will let you know what the exact problem was. Thanks for pointing me in a direction Chryco Psycho, much appreciated.

I removed the wire  from the starter to the starter relay, checked resistance all good, made sure terminals were clean, put it all back together only one start  then nothing, Swapped out another new starter relay, got two starts then nothing again. Going to pull the starter tomorrow and have it checked. The starter is a new mini high torque put on about 1000 miles since installed.

Apparently the backup light switch has shorted out. Using a jump wire in the nss feed line, it starts every time. Thanks for the help

Glad you found the source.
Had a similar issue a couple of years ago. Changed starter, same. Put new starter relay on. Car did nothing, it was bad.
Traced and checked everything. Put on another rebuilt starter starter because the it sounded odd. It was from same supplierror and ended up sounding about the same. Lived with the intermittent for another year. Purchased another starter from another supplier and now all is good.
Multiple crap starters was the issue...  :villagers:
