Wanted: 440 Block
« on: July 06, 2016 - 01:58:13 PM »
Looking for long or short 440 block.  It would be for a 62 Dodge Polara (see pic) that currently has a 383.

Would like it for street use and sometimes going to strip just for fun.  Nothing serious.  Will stroke it like I did the 340 in Challenger.

Would prefer something within 5 hours or less of Nashville, TN.

I have been eyeballing Craigslist on and off for awhile.

Thanks for any help or thoughts.

Indy Heads should have the Chrysler 440 blocks available. http://www.indyheads.com/images/price.2015.09.pdf

I talked to them about purchasing one this past December and they said they had several in stock at that time.  In my case, my engine builder called and said he had a good 69' block sitting on his shelf, so I bought from him instead for about half the price.

I would never buy from Indy, the worst customer service of any vendor out there.  There are plenty of 440 blocks on craigslist, ebay, etc.  Ask local engine builders around you, should be able to find something.

I don't have experience with purchasing from Indy, so I can't comment on their customer service.  However, to me, buying a bare block that has already been shotblasted, magnufluxed, pressure tested and bored seems a much wiser route than taking a chance on some Craigslist block that you're going to have to sink another $200 into on top of your purchase price just to determine if you've got one worth using.  I know guys who've ended up buying 3 or 4 from Craigslist before finding one they felt good about.  Besides, how much customer assistance is really necessary for a bare block purchase?

Thanks.

I didn't realize Indy sold bare blocks that were machined.  So if I read it correct I get a bare iron block (440) that they have machined for around $1,295.00 plus shipping if needed.

After looking all over Craigslist for awhile this does not seem to be unreasonable.  And it carries a little piece of mind with it.

Let me know if I'm missing something.
