1970 Challenger Vinyl top at bottom of Windshield pillar
« on: July 19, 2016 - 07:58:54 AM »
Can someone post a picture of how the vinyl top is trimmed at the bottom of the windshield pillar on a car with an original vinyl top?  I found this picture which shows the trim going beyond the endcap, but I am not sure how legit that is.  Chris

I would trim it so it ends under the cap :2cents:

:iagree:  Stop the vinyl under the trim cap.  What's the point of the cap if you run the vinyl past it?  :dunno:  The line workers probably only had a few minutes per car to install a top.  I'm sure some came with the vinyl trimmed long.  The "intent" of those caps is to end the vinyl there.  Unless you can prove your car originally came with the vinyl trimmed long, finish it under the cap.  :2cents:

On a side note, make sure you remove those pieces before having the body blasted.  I had one where the screw stripped and didn't want to come out.  I decided to just deal with it later.   :screwy:  It was a PITA trying to sand and polish that piece once it had been blasted.

Sounds like under the cap is the popular consensus. My car is already in final paint, the next thing being the vinyl top install. Pics under Member Restoration Projects.  Look for 1970 FM3 Challenger Project.
thanks

Think of it from the standpoint of the designer: He wanted shiny bits to trim out all parts of the vinyl roof.  Why let the vinyl go past that?  From an assembly line perspective, who cares? just get the dang thing on the car, and move on down the line to the next one!  Trim it.  you will be happy you did!

Agree with above post.
I will lay odds that your new paint job is better than the factory paint. So one should assume all the small detail items will also be better than factory delivered.
