Help needed with leaking power steering
« on: August 03, 2016 - 01:42:14 PM »
Hello,

The power steering box on my 73 Challenger is leaking. Guessing it's the upper seal (it leaks from where the steering wheel shaft meets the steering box). It began leaking right after the car overheated while waiting in line at a car show!  ::)

If I put oil in it the power steering works well even though it's quite noisy, but of course it leaks.

I have trouble finding the correct part number and the dealers around here don't have catalogs before 1987...

Thanks

Loa

There is a seal right there..I can find the name of it for you tonight.

That being said...it looks like the seal has popped out.  The green ring looks a lot like the seal and should be seated into the top of the steering box.

Can you take a little closer picture and or see if that green ring is loose?

Yes, it doe move. I could push it back in (haven't done it yet).

Here's a closer look.

Thanks!

That is the seal...it popped out.  A new seal can be purchased at your local parts store.  No need to go to the dealer.  If that one popped out, don't be surprised if it pops right back out again.

New seal.  The OLD seal might pop right out again.

Ah! I thought you meant that a new seal would pop right out, as if it was missing a piece to lock it in.

I'll try with the local parts store, but in Canada, it's not as easy to find parts...

Thanks.

looks like you guys got it all covered.  Sorry got tied upa  work and stuff with the kids last night.

I am in  :canada: as well (Cambridge ON), I would think that NAPA should have that seal.

Yep, they do. In a kit with others, which drives up the price, but not so bad. Hopefully that seal was the only problem with my power steering...

Thanks all for the help.

Hello,

Just to confirm, the only trouble seems to have been the seal. I replaced it and everything works, no noise, no leaks.

Thanks!
