I'm sure you have it assembled correctly but I've seen the question asked before so I'll throw this out there.  The gasket goes between the tank and the sending unit.  Some people have actually put the gasket between the sending unit and the lock ring...

I had a similar experience, twice. Mine was due to the gasket moving under the locking ring during assembly thus allowing fuel to get out.
A friend of mine told me to coat the rubber gasket with a very thin layer of vaseline on both side when installing. I did this and it sealed off perfectly.

Hope this helps,

Cheers!

I too had the same problem, use some sylglyde ,and it sealed up, it seems like the rubber gasket will move, causing distortion and hence a leak, these things are junk along with the aftermarket sending units,I wish there was a better design  :swear: :swear: :swear:

pull the tank or do it in place:

No lift.

Opinions?

I have a lift and still couldn't get mine to seat properly. This was before trying the vaseline so that could have made a difference.
This happened to me twice so I decided it would be better to just pull the tank and see the gasket was seated properly with my own eyes in front of me. I just couldn't see that from under the car.
Good luck.

Thanks,

I'll pull the tank this week-end.

Topcat,
One more thing, when you have the tank out and have fitted the sender assembly, put some gas in it and allow it to lay on its side so the sender is covered. This will be a test to be certain it isn't going to leak.

It might be different but on my 67 I couldn't get it to seal correctly so I used a large o ring and a large snap ring to hold the sender in.  It was a very tight fit but it hasn't leaked a drop in 7yrs

Good idea! thanks!

What really makes me think back on about this whole situation is:

I drove the car with the way it's been for almost 2 years without a drop coming out.
Then one day, it was like a dam broke and flooding.

My new lock ring and gasket were noticeably thinner than stock so the lock ring would not really tighten up. So I used two gaskets.

Possibilities on what happened:

The seal had small cracks

The spanner steel part was worn and wasn't holding tight to the rubber seal

The flange on the tank the seal rests on had a small inward dent which I straightened.

It's all fixed now and she's back ready for action.

Was really hot out. I probably sweated a gallon out.
