Starting Issue/883 Issue
« on: August 06, 2016 - 08:10:10 PM »
I seem to have come into a rash of issues with my car and I'm not sure if any are related. I could sure use some input on these, I'm about ready to take the car to a mechanic and I hate the thought of that.

1)  Got a small oil leak at front of motor that I can't seem to track down.  Originally thought it was oil filter but replaced and issue persists.  Seems like the leak isn't constant which is the strangest thing.

2)  A few weeks ago I drove the car to a local meet-up, on the way there I was having a lot of issue getting the car into 4th gear.  The trans had been working fine.  I just figured I needed to check the adjustment on the selector.  Anyway, I ended up parking the car on a slight incline (nose up).  When I went to leave the car didn't want to start.  The car would crank VERY slowly or not at all like the battery was dead.  To add insult to injury I tried rolling the car backwards out of its parking spot however even with the clutch in it was very difficult to roll like a gear was still engaged.  Luckily the motor finally turned over and I made it home.  The strange part is that the car doesn't lurch in any way while cranking whether in gear w/ clutch depressed or in neutral.  I went to take the car out again tonight, made it to the first intersection and happened to kill it.  Again, very slow crank and wouldn't turnover.  I put a multimeter on the battery and it read a little over 12V.  Threw some jumper cables on it and fired up like with no problem.

3)  The most troubling issue is that the motor sounds to me like something there's some friction somewhere.  I'm just not smart enough to diagnose it.  I will say that with these issues I check the oil in it EVERY time I start the car.  I know you probably can't hear the issue from this video but here it is anyway.  http://vid142.photobucket.com/albums/r119/forumpete/20160806_182709.mp4
Thanks guys!

I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but to me it sounds like you have a lack of crankshaft end play. I can't say for sure with out hearing it personally, but you should have the engine checked out by a competent mechanic asap to avoid major engine damage. Have them check end play and any rotational binding of the crankshaft. I hope it's something simple! :2thumbs:

put a charger on your battery. Maybe be very low, or
not have enough juice. Also, make sure engine grounded well.

I keep a trickle charger on it when its not being driven and the battery is no more than 6 months old.  As far as grounding I suppose thats always a possibility, can never have enough grounds right?

You used to be able to buy a small handheld inductive amp meter that you simply held against the positive battery cable while someone cranked it over. That'll tell you what it's drawing when trying to start. I've seen cars pull over 500 amps with a bad starter. Eliminate any starter issues before looking at the engine. Good luck

A charged battery will read 13.2v or higher running it should be 13.8-14.2 so the battery is weak .
You may also have green death inside the battery cables , resistance there can cause a lot of problems .
would check the clutch adjustment , it may not be releasing fully & dragging with the pedal pushed , you should only have 1? max of free play at the top of the pedal travel the adjustment is made with the adjuster rod where it contacts the release fork under the car .
Oil leak - What engine , which side dripping from engine or K frame ? too many possibilties

As far as the oil leak, you can get a dye to add to your oil. Clean the leaking area and add dye. When it leaks again check it with a black light. The oil will glow under the black light making it easier to see where it is coming from.
