My 73 'by Plymouth' was black w/silver letters... black faded to bronze-ish color... mounted with two pot-metal posts and speed nuts on inside of trunk.

Leave it that way.
Mine is the same.

I've owned my car since 72' in my family.

I restored it before with an OEM NOS "by plymouth" back in the 90's.

It faded after a year.

Thanks djw383......It took me months to find that one. Since mine is a resto mod I was just looking for a badge to fill the holes and since I have no chrome on my car this one fit the bill just right.

So to the question of how to get it the way it should be on a Cuda, paint the whole thing black (I believe satin is as close as you are going to get to Factory), then using a block with some 320 or finer sand paper, lightly run it over the face of the emblem, it will slowly remove the black on the letters and edges leaving you with what you are after. I did mine 2 or three times trying different methods and this yield the best results by far.

For the record;

1. trying to wipe the black off the letters and edges using something like acetone on a rag will end up with the solvent in places you don't want it and give you a crappy result.

2. trying to scrap off the paint with a razor blade is both an act of frustration as well as potentially damaging to what you are trying to make nice
