Rebuild 904 or get a TCI Streetfighter 904?
« on: September 15, 2016 - 01:37:37 PM »
Hi all,

Since I dropped in the new engine, me and the 904 gearbox hasn't become friends again.  It slips pretty much in all gears and it has a hard time to determine which gear is proper based on speed.
It wasn't like super stable and correct with the old engine either, but with the new engine it's very obvious something's wrong
Anyway, a local (trusted) transmission shop checked the valve housing and adjusted the bands. Sadly, nothing of the above made things better so the guy recommended a full rebuild.
I totally trust this guy. He's been in business since the late sixties, and even rebuilt my daddy's Buick gearbox back in the day. He's definitely not trying to rip me off.

Thing is, a total rebuild of it is just north of $800 so I started to think that it might be better to get a TCI Streetfighter 904 which is  about $1200 (plus cheap container shipping from the States) with warranty.
Opinions on this? Can I get a better- or equal good gearbox than the Streetfighter?

Thanks in advance for your input!

TCI reputation is spotty. A good rebuild with quality parts by a qualified tech will net much better results. Just make sure your rebuilder uses better quality parts in the rebuild than just daily driver quality parts.

NOT so with TCI

Just called another local shop that gave a quote of $1400 for the rebuild, although he said that I should find a 727 instead as the 904's so weak and will break down sooner or later anyway.

What do you guys say? My 360 is a little beefed up, in the neighborhood of 300 HP's.

What do you guys say? Should I find a 727 or will I be fine with rebuilding the 904?

Thanks!

Depending on HP the 904 is capable.

Some Hemi racers use the 904 because it's quicker in the 1/4. Those transmissions are heavily modified from their stock form however.  There is nothing wrong with a 904 behind a moderate 360 and you don't have to worry about the front drum exploding like you do on a 727.  Have your builder install a Trans-Go TF-2 kit.  Much faster/cleaner shifts without the overlap that you get with some lesser kits.  :2cents:

Thanks everyone!
As we're facing six months of winter up here with nothing else that needs to be done to the car, we thought we'd rebuild the transmission and install the TransGo shiftkit ourselves 😄
In your opinion, which rebuild kit is the best and most complete?
Thanks!

Our old friend Terry had some recommendations

A stock rebuild kit will work fine. Go with a Transgo shift kit.Your tranny man should be able to order anything you need or go to :http://www.transmissionpartsusa.com/TF8_A727_transmission_parts_s/1328.htm
