Heater A/C box position of flapper doors
« on: October 01, 2016 - 04:31:17 PM »
I got my ac working but when driving it doesn't cool the car much, but I, in Ft Lauderdale.  What is the position of the flapper doors when the car is off?    When I start the car and put on the AC the vacuum pot near the right side of the box moves.   The vacuum pot near the gas pedal does not move.    Is that correct?   The pot next to the gas pedal doesn't move at any time if I turn on the AC or heat.

I might disconnect t the heat anyway as I'm in a hot climate and will never use it, but I would like the AC to cool better.    I rebuilt the heater box but the heater might be bleeding heat into the AC I'm thinking.

If the vacuum pot are working correctly I might just bypass the heater core.

So, What is the position of the flapper doors when the car is off?

Sorry can't answer your question about the flapper doors. I'm my experience with Challenger A/C, 30+ years worth using either R12 or R134a on my cars the A/C has never cooled great. It will bring the air down to around the upper 40's low 50's on a good day.  I keep the heater core capped also as I don't use the car during the winter. This has been the same using the RV2 compressor and my current Sanden compressor.

On A/C equipped E bodies there is no temperature control by any of the vacuum controlled doors.... The air direction is controlled but temperature is controlled by the heater water valve in the engine compartment.....  It's common for some hot water to get past the valve so plugging the hoses in warmer climates isn't a bad idea....

While the A/C won't freeze you out it will do a reasonable job of keeping the interior comfortable... But it's also common for the fan to not receive full current & for the airflow to seem like it's only on low or at best medium.... Adding relays so the current no longer passes through the switch or bulkhead connectors helps tremendously...

Ok, I'll think I'll do that.      Cap off the heater and install the relay.   I have relays for the headlights and that has worked great.
Thanks,

Thanks, I might try those ideas of capping the heater and using relay as Im in Houston, we do get some cold weather but can always uncap for those times.
