Adding a inertia fuel pump shut off switch
« on: October 16, 2016 - 09:28:02 AM »
Just replacing my electric fuel pump with my spare and I got to thinking ( again, I never did it before)  about adding a inertia fuel pump safety switch.
What have others done?  Is there any problems with them being to sensitive as to vibrations, acceleration, etc....
Where do you suggest mounting it? ( trunk?)
I was looking at this one....

I wouldn't say that switch is sensitive to vibrations at all, but having worked at Ford dealerships through the 80's & 90's I did have to reset a few when cars would come in on a hook... Generally when someone had absolutely slammed the trunk shut & occasionally when someone slammed the left rear door....  There are two contacts which also happen to be fairly strong magnets, a large ball bearing & a medium strength spring pushes against the ball trying to separate it from the magnets.... It takes a pretty solid shot to open the circuit...

If your running a relay it's best to wire the switch on the control side so it passes less current but in some applications Ford did put it in the main circuit....

I have two of those Ford switches in my garage, I plan on using one in my Barracuda. It takes a pretty good whack to get it to kill the fuel pump, I don't expect that you will have any issues in this application.

In my Ford Ranger, I used to smack the passenger kick panel when parking in a sketchy area, it would trip that inertia switch and kill the truck. Not a bad form of theft deterrent.

Thanks for the input!  I bought the one in the e-bay link. I'll wire it to the control side like you suggested ( I am running a relay) :2thumbs:

Where are you going to mount it? I like Goody's idea of the kick panel but there is not a lot of room there.

Planning on mounting it in the trunk. The relay for the fuel pump is back there along with the battery....

How do you reset it if it functions on a hard stop or knock to enable a restart?

Not to hijack the thread but i was going to install one as well as a rollover vent shutoff. Anyone using those?
