Remember to check
« on: October 12, 2016 - 12:32:53 PM »
I put on just about 2000 miles since I got my car back on the road. The last few times I took it out I thought I heard some whine from the rear end. When I pulled the fill plug and dipped my finger in, I was surprised to see black and silver fluid. Brand new 8 3/4 center from Mancini eating it's self. As with many of us we buy parts well before we get to use them. I bought the diff 8-9 years ago. So no chance of any warranty work. Turns out that the mesh was way off. The ring gear was getting the front and bottom edge chewed off. Like a hockey stick shape.
So what I have learned is; Even though the parts are brand new doesn't mean someone didn't make an assembly mistake.Inspect and reinspect your mechanical parts as best as you can. Had I done a mesh check before installing and driving I'd be ok today.
I know many of you seasoned folks will have known to do this. It's a psa for all the new people.

Curious about 'ring gear front and bottom edge' wear... Do you mean tooth face and outer diameter wear?

I already installed the center. I'm terrible at remembering to take pics. Sorry. So in your picture, Choose the second down on the left.  The inner peak of the Heel down to the corner of the heel side of the coast was being chewed. Just the edges showed wear. But for as little miles that are on it, it was bad. Unfortunately at this time the guy just re-meshed it. He said it will work fine but may still make noise. Ill have my spare one rebuilt when I save enough $$$ and Ill swap it out. Or over the winter re-pull this one and put a new gear set in it. I'd like to have a spare though.

Not a problem, Thanks! Was just curious as I put new bearings in my 8 3/4 this year.

Surprising that the wear is on the coast side, though... it almost sounds like a hardening issue on ring gear...
