Trans leaks after rebuild?

Hey guys - Long time no see.  Hope all is well in ebodyland. I had a question on my 340 trans rebuild that a local shop did for me. Its been nearly a year since the rebuild and admittedly I haven't put 100 miles on it since. The trans leaks large puddles on my garage floor so I took it back to them today. Owner stated two things:

• Trans needs to have 500 miles on it for seals to break n
• If car sits, torque converter can drain back into the pan over filling it and dumping out the vent

Of the two the latter seems feasible. Still I cleaned the puddle, took out for short drive and still it had leaked about a 3"diameter puddle after a few days. So tell me, have you guys seen it where the a trans will leak after fresh rebuild? I'd think the seals should all be tight and makes no sense to me if its sitting static. There may be a case to be made for sittign long periods of time but I dont buy the required "seals break-in" period.

My 904 was rebuilt in 2013. It didn't leak from day 1 to this day. That's with it sitting for 6 months at a time over 3 winters too. Sounds like your shop is trying to get out of fixing it. Now watch, I probably jinxed myself.

Yeah, i figured. I guess he'd have me believe these cars were all leaking trans fluid at the dealerships when new. Too bad about this shop, they have been family owned and operated business for years and had a great reputation until they were bought out under new mgmt.

Damn, I thought I did not drive mind much!  LOL

Get under it and look for the leak..may help to clean it off so you can see where it originates from.

The pan, the dipstick tube, the park/neutral switch (both where it slips into the transmission case and on the end where the the electrical plug connects), the speedometer gear housing, the connections to the cooling in lines, etc.

That quantity should be easy to trace back to an origin.  If none of those points appear to be leaking, drop the inspection cover and see if it is dripping down from behind the converter.

I had several 727's leak at the seal where the gearshift shaft is. Seems to be common. It is possible to change the seal with the tranny in place but its not very easy.

The shop probably did not change the selector shaft seal when they rebuilt it. Easy job if do not have headers. Best done on a lift where you can see better. You can get the tool on amazon for about $40 and a seal is about $3. You can pick the old seal out if careful and tap or press the new one in with a socket and a c clamp. Several videos on line to give you an idea.

Thanks for the info, its at their shop still under their 1yr/10k warranty. Kills me this guy would make up some bull shi** like that. I'll never take a car there again.

Tell them you went to a couple new car lots, and looked at all the cars that had been sitting with 0-20 miles on the clock, and none of them leaked. I never heard a line of BS before. They need to fix it right. Good luck.

Picked it up yesterday, they said they found a speedo leak. It sat overnight and not a drop of trans fluid under it. Hopefully its a done deal now.

The shop should have looked at it instead of telling you what they did, would have found and fixed the problem and probably kept you as a customer.
Things can always happen, something can be missed , could have been worked on a Monday or Friday etc.
