How to support front suspension during build-out on K member?
« on: October 27, 2016 - 06:39:59 AM »
My engine and K-member are sitting on one of the high-tech piano mover carts from Harbor Freight.   I've mocked up one side of the front suspension as shown in the picture below.  With everything loose, the lower control arm droops down - no big surprise.   To keep from dinging up the dust shield by hitting the floor, will simply tightening the nut on the end of the lower control arm pivot shaft be enough to support the suspension including the front rotors during assembly?   I've got a small cardboard box tucked under the control arm for now, but knowing that the engine and suspension are going to be moved around the garage, this approach won't necessarily protect everything.  I'm guesssing/hoping there's enough resistance in the pivot shaft bushing to keep the components airborne but thought I would check with one of you that have already been done this road.

I'd get a cheap ratchet strap, and put a bolt in the shock mount holes on lower CA, hook strap to that and loop over top of engine to other side, and tighten strap up to hold them up out of the way.

Like Alan said, your sway bar will help hold up the control arms.  If they still hang too low, just modify your cart a little.  You can build a platform out of 2x4s that you can set on top of the cart that will move the K-member off the ground a little bit more.

A piece of mechanics wire tied from the top of the spindle to the K frame hole will work too
