Heater control panel differences
« on: November 19, 2016 - 10:32:34 PM »
So I have a couple of questions on these panels. I have two of these parts, one has the vertical ribs and one is a smooth finish. Both versions have two part numbers listed on the back, 2884718 and 2884705

1) I know there is a rallye and non-rallye version, is the difference in the finish or is it more than that? What type of finish did the rallye dash version have?

2) The one that came on my car was the smooth version and also has a hole through the front face. I cannot tell if someone drilled it or it was there originally. I know some cars came with a rear speaker knob, but I'm not sure my car ever had rear speakers. It does have a 3 speaker system up front. Does the size and location of this hole appear original?

Ribbed is a 70 only Challenger non rallye, second is the correct one for a rally 70-74 Chally and Cuda. I will do some checking to see it the hole appears on a couple of my cars. Thinking may be a speaker balance switch location, but not positive until i do some checking.

The difference between rally and non-rally is quite obvious.  The large "half-moon" cut out in your ribbed one is for a non-rally speedo. The fact that it is ribbed (for her pleasure :naughty: ) means that it is a 1970 Challenger only, not Cuda.

The small hole in your smooth one is not factory, some one added it. The reason I say that is that the rear speaker fader knob requires two holes, a smaller one for the guide pin that clocks the bezel correctly.
I've taught you everything you know.....but I haven't taught you everything I know !

Also, I believe the Rallye version had a wrinkle finish.

Yes, have seen some images of restored and reproduction pieces and it looks like a fine texture.

I restored mine and it came out like this. Picture doesn't have the greatest focus but you'll get the idea.

If you need a non rally 70 heater control bezel (non ribbed) I have an extra one. I could trade you for the ribbed one... ;)

Thanks. I did find a reproduction panel I bought a few years ago. Do you need a ribbed one?

I've been collecting the ribbed pieces for a few years.. I have a Challenger instrument panel on display at work (FCA) aka Chrysler.. my intent is to complete the panel as a 70.

Here is a pic of what went on display for the Dodge 100th anniversary event.. this thing toured America!
Since that time I've found some of the cluster face bezels and installed them.
