Another stupid question
« on: November 30, 2015 - 06:40:49 PM »
The other day when I first sat in my 2011 challenger I got a message to
change the rke battery, which I did.
Ever since then when I enter the car & sit down, before I even touch
the brake pedal or start button, a loud fast clicking sound comes on
for about 10 seconds. The sound is coming from behind the dash, and as suddenly
as it starts, it stops.
Anyone got a clue?

My son's 07 Mustang has a similar sound.   In his case, the sound is from one of the electric actuators for the ventilation system doors gone bad.   Search YouTube for "dash knocking sound Ford Mustang" and see if one of the clips matches what you're hearing.   One example:

In the case of the Mustang, it's a major PIA to replace.   I was able to get my hand on the bad actuator put removal was impossible without pulling the entire dash apart because of the way the actuator fasteners were covered up with the vent plastic channels.

The sound is similar but mine is faster and my car isn't even on.
Before I can press the brake pedal & then hit the start button,
the clicking starts & stops.
Then if I stop it, walk away & get back in it doesn't happen.
But after about 20 minutes, if I enter the car it clicks.

It happens with both rke's, both brand new batteries,
and I took em apart and re sealed em nice & tight,
but still I get the noise even though the car is off.

Well I googled it.
Turns out thousands of dodges & chryslers have em.
Challys, Chargers, Avengers, Rams, 300 c's
Most have them while driving.
Mine only happened b4 I started the car.
Now it even happens after the car is started.

Tons of people have posted that it has to do with their a/c systems.
Some have it happen only when the car is running.
Some, like me, get it b4 I even start the car.
Could it sense my rke unit & go off b4 it starts?

As for prices to fix I've seen 250, 850, & $1200 plus.
The last guy pd so much b/c the dealer said the dash had
to be removed & that's where the noise is coming from.
The part is a blend door actuator.

$1000 electric steering pump, $1250 w/installation
4 new tires 2 months ago
& now this.
Thanks dodge.
At least they reimbursed me $850 when I had
my alternator replaced 1 month b4 they issued the recall.

It is the blend door recalibrating itself. It does that ever since I got the car. Dodge did something wrong in the software as there is no point of this when the car is not running. May be because of this, my blend door actuator is now dead. The part is about $35 only but it could be pain to change as it is deep behind the center dash. I will be working on it probably in the next few weeks.

Google it and you see what I am talking about.

It's at the dreaded dodge dealer, they quoted me 220-285 depending on which actuator it is.
But the service rep saw the video of it going off as I was seating myself.
He said it was tiny terrorists shooting at me.
HAHA, if it comes in over 285, the bigger terrorists will be shooting at him.

I saw on sites people wanting to start a class action lawsuit against dodge
b/c so many thousands are doing it, it should be a recall.

early 2000 and up impalas have the blend door actuator issues as well. although from what i've read they may be a little easier to get to from what was described in this post. i haven't heard if any of the 2014 and up impalas have this issue however, probably not old enough to fail quite yet.

Could it be the seat sensor or seat belt sensor. Open the door but do not get in and close the door to listen is the sound activates. If it does it more likely is the door.  :2cents:
