EFI Holley HP vs FAST xfi vs ??
« on: January 06, 2017 - 12:50:37 AM »
I am about ready to dive into a fuel injection project.  I don't know much, but I am willing to learn.  So far, after doing a little research, I have come up with that it probably doesn't matter which system I want to use, it is all about how easy it is to learn to use.   My motor is too performance built to run the self learning only systems.   I will not need to have all the bells and whistles, but the higher end systems have better memory and faster computing.   I have talked to Rich at Fastmanefi.com and he is steering me towards the Holley hp system, with FAST xfi as an equal.  My decision.  Sounds like the Holley is used more and has more support, related to its affiliation with racing sanctions.  The Holley learns faster, but is harder to navigate.  The FAST xfi is easier to navigate, slower to learn, and is an older software system compared to the Holley.  Chryco has recommended SDS efi due to its handheld tuning, and easy to use software. It won't like my low vaccum at idle and I have to use it in Alpha mode.   It doesn't use the standard IAC idle system, and is very limited production, but customer service is great.  Both Holley and FAST use the dual sync distributors.  I will also need a new ignition that is compatible.  Both systems are able to connect to my transmission computer.  I will use a Aeromotive Phantom 340 fuel pump and have a 3/8" return line.  For ease of use, I want to buy a complete system from one company.  All plug and play.  Fastmanefi.com has a good maps for a similar engine and similar intake system so I don't have to start from scratch.
I don't need any advice for systems that will use throttle body efi.  My plans are to bolt on the F&B 6bbl with MPI in an edelbrock 6bbl intake.  But I do need advice on each of the Holley and FAST system as to the ease of use of the software usage.  I can only assume the bolting on all of the hardware will be the same between each system.  Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.  Oh yeah, is it worth the $$? :money:

I went with Megasquirt 3,   It can do everything,  but it is a
'do it yourself" system.   And you must go to a forum for support, so probably not what your looking for, but it is the cheapest I believe.

Check out MS3-Pro

I soldered together mine and it runs coil on plug ignition and sequential fuel.    Turn the key, it starts, hot or cold, and drive, no warm up needed. 505 stroker.

I liked the challenge of building it, making a trigger wheel, ect      you could use a distributor.

Ive gone FAST XFI sportsman with 2.0 throttle body injection rather that direct port rail, the XFI gives the FAST system much more tune-ability and more important for me as its a street bruiser and 1/4 mile thrasher was the ability to have a couple of preset tunes, so, I can have a mild tune for round town and cruising then simply via a handheld or laptop choose a race tune for the strip. Several systems do this, I chose FAST for now specific reason, I just liked it

I looked at the megasquirt and it is just to involved for what I want to do.  I was hoping somebody here had intimate knowledge of the nuances of each systems tuning abilities and disabilities.  I heard the FAST system is a little easier to go through the software vs the Holley.  But if I only run one, what difference will it make?   I suppose I just have to pick a system and stick to it until I know how to work it and get my car tuned.  At least I haven't heard to absolutely avoid one brand.  It seems as though Crash had to make the same decision.  I will order something next week unless I get some great feedback before then.  I am still leaning toward the Holley HP because Fastmanefi has set up a handful of the 6bbl throttle body kits and has maps already made.  I will go with the given rather than try an experiment with my set up.

I know it may not be relevant for OP, but Fuel Tech 5 and 6 have touch screen you can choose 1 of 4 tunes. Immediate.  No laptop needed  you can sit in burnout box and see how guys in front hook up - then go to appropriate tune. Pretty neat. And screen can show myriad of readings

Perhaps more for racing application. But buddy mine whose been tuner (and raced) with FAST for years brought up idea of Fuel Tech. Not that FAST is bad. Just others out there.

Just FYI for absorption for any readers   http://www.fueltech.net

Pricing in consideration of total package/component needs is pretty fair
