Where to mount rear view camera?
« on: February 26, 2017 - 01:57:19 AM »
I want to mount a rear view camera on my 70' Challenger. This is even more important since it is a SE and has a smaller rear window. I can only find two places to put it. On the topof the license plate frame or in place of the trunk key lock. For the latter use a cable release instead of a key. Any ideas or experience?

You could mount it right on the plate light lense.  I installed one on my cargo light in a similar way before.  They also make plate frames with cameras built in

Late model electronic latch will bolt-in and open via a button.

Good advice guys thanks. Was there an option for a remote trunk release?

I don't think a remote release ever was an option on E bodies (some one correct me if I'm wrong). I have one of those license plate mount wireless cameras on the trailer. I'm going to change it to a wire version cause the reception is poor. I have the wires run though the hole for the tag light.

I'm also going to change the display to one of those mirror displays that clip over the existing mirror. The display I have now is small and it's wedged in the ashtray and is difficult to use.

What kind of display do you plan on using? Are you looking for wired or wireless?

Good question purple. Does the one that clips on your mirror cover the mirror so the camera must stay on? I have not heard of this although it makes some sense. I want a wired system for pic quality and rejection of interfearance.

You could install a gentex mirror with a built in camera display

Gm, toyota, Nissan etc all used gentex and they are pretty cheap at junkyards

The camera does not have to stay on if you don't want it. The mirror looks (and works) like just a regular mirror until you turn on the display. It clips right on the original mirror so you are not altering the car at all. You just got to get the wires to it.

Here is what I am going with. Ignore the model train in the background. It was the only quick spot to use for a pic.
