Sock filter is a good idea. Will it live without it in a good/new tank? Sure.

Thing is newer fuel sold in parts of the US (California for sure) attack the plastic the filter sock is made of..... 

But while on the subject if you plan to use the repo sending unit lock ring it's best you re-use the original. the repo is thinner metal & is prone to leaks....

Can you use the repro gasket? I better check where my OE ring is when I get home tonight.
