Do I need bigger disc brakes than 11"?
« on: February 07, 2017 - 02:45:16 PM »
Right now I have Magnum 14” wheels on the 1970 Challenger, drum brakes all around, power steering and manual brakes.

I'd like to upgrade to disc brakes on all wheels. Wilwood 11" disc brakes should clear the 14" wheels so that would be the easiest route.

My plan is to upgrade the wheels to:
Year One 17” Magnum wheels (front: 17x8" wheels, 245/45 tyres, back: 17x9" wheels, 275/40 tyres)
OR
15” Rallye or Magnum wheels (front: 15x7" wheels, 245/60 tyres, back: 15x8” wheels, 275/60 tyres)

Since I live in Croatia I will be doing a lot of driving on curvy roads, I won’t be doing any drag racing or autocross. Just Sunday driving for pleasure so my primary concern is low-end torque, good handling (probably I'll upgrade to Hothckis TVS) and good brakes.

The question is: are the 11" disc brakes enough? Or I need to step up to 12.19"?

If I want to go for bigger brakes that means I have to buy new wheels and tyres at the same time. A big investment to be made at once so I prefer to do it step by step. If I get the 11” disc brakes I can save money now and continue to drive on 14” wheels.

What are your experiences?

11" is sufficient for average driving.

12.2" should be considered if you plan on really putting heat into the brakes. More spirited or getting into timed events.

I think stopping power is just as important as a good a suspension.  I would go with 12.2".

I got my 17" wheels and tires setup two years ago. I am working on the brakes now. 13" front and 11.7" back from Dr. Diff. Still waiting for the front to show up. I think it is on back order. I have Brembo on my SRT so once you get used to that, you need to adjust when driving something else.

IMO, 11" brakes will be good. I have 11" cross drilled and slotted rotors with ceramic pads and a big block up front. No braking issues.

11 inch up front, 10 inch Doctor Diff in the back, power brakes with the bigger booster.....never an issue, but I do not autocross....doctor diff uses oem cobra calipers, I read oem stores better than race brakes which have more of a tendency to leak when sitting, sorry to say but most of our cars do sit, unfortunately, when life gets in the way.... 2 cents...
