440 carb & distributor questions
« on: January 29, 2017 - 01:23:45 PM »
1st off, forced induction and fuel injection is my realm of experience. I now have an 82 ram truckwith a 440 swapped,727, 3.23's.
Motor is 10:1, long tubes. just removed 906 heads and installed an off brand set of new aluminum 210cc heads that were stripped of all the junk valve train and replaced with better valves, springs, etc,,, heights were set, pressures etc. Engine has a purple cam, Mopar aluminum intake, msd pro billet & coil and for whatever reason a pile of **** carter 625. Since swapping the heads( which is all I've done since getting the vehicle), runs horrible until you get up into rpms. I've been quietly researching here and seems an 850 is the way to go. Thinking probably a quick fuel carb. I would like to set it up myself but I have no idea where to even start with the jetting, squirters, , cams, etc. Would like direction to a thread or some sound advise on a good starting point as I don't know what the motors like. Also, ifeel the msd has got to go unless I can tune it for street use. It is now as it came out of the box but have never setup a mechanical advance dist. Advise? Sorry for the long post

Ok, first: Welcome to the site!
If I am reading your post correctly, The engine ran ok with the 906 heads on it (same carb and distributor etc) but now runs badly in the lower rpm range and seems to smooth out at the higher rpm range?
What is the combustion chamber size in C.C.s on these aluminum heads?

Dunno the brand. Customer supplied them, gaskets, milodon bolts, plugs etc. They are stamped as 210 cc customer doesn't know either. He had mark dudley set him up. Mark purchased a cheap set, removed all the v.train and replaced with severe duty valves, matching springs for 228f50 cams, set heights ,pressures, better locks and retainers. Using stock rockers and hardened pushrods. Dunno the brand or the chamber size.

Ok well with so many unknowns, it is best to start at the beginning. I would recommend to warm up the engine and take a compression test on all cylinders. Record and post the readings for each cylinder. Do you have access to an accurate compression gauge?
