1971 'Cuda 8 3/4" inspection mark I.D help
« on: February 20, 2017 - 08:40:54 AM »
I decided to clean off 46 years of grease and road grime on my 1971 340 'Cuda yesterday and found several paint inspection marks, I found some slight remains of a yellow  axle code on the left axle tube, Orange and white paint daubs on the bottom of the carrier, A yellow "G" to the right of the housing pumpkin but I cannot make out the white marks on the pumpkin itself. It looks like a sideways "J" but the other mark below that looks like it might have been a tilted "A" but some of it is missing, I know no two cars were the same but has anybody seen similar marks that will help me figure out how those marks could have looked when applied ?

Well it's a little different from my 70, on mine & quite a few other 70's there was a F E which my guess is meant 70 (F) & E body (E)

Yours has the 71 model year (G) moved off to the axle tube  I wonder if the two letters might be J & B being the two body styles covered by the E body? Just a thought...

Oh, the orange daub on the bottom followed by three more daubs indicated Sure Grip, the other three daubs are gear ratio...

On the left tube should be a date & an axle code..

Also allot of what shows up in my pictures I couldn't read at all till I sprayed WD-40 on the thing, it really brought out the faint markings...

My center section was out of a donor AAR 27 years ago and is a 3.55 sure grip and has orange and white marks, my car is coded for a 3.23 sure grip so it's not correct but might provide good reference for someone. It looks like 019 on the axle tube but no date visible.

I ran across this photo on the internet of an unrestored 71 Cuda rear end. I'm wondering if what I thought was a sideways J is a 4 ? Mine is the bottom photo.
