Can I use a 904 trans with a 70-73 340 engine or should I get a 727 trans? I currently have a 73 challenger with a 318. I working on a budget. Thanks

The only issue I'm aware of is if the 340 is internally or externally balanced. As i understand all 318's are external so you may need to make changes to the torque converter if the new 340 is internally balanced.
I'm told this is as simple as removing the welded on weights on the converter but I'd triple check that before going forward.

I have a 340 internal balanced with a 904. 340 flexplate and noon weighted converter. The 904 will be beef up to go with my 416 stroker soon. My builder told me it can take 600 hp.

there are some things that can be done to make the 904 more
reliable and stronger, I suspect. On my 727, I had it rebuilt, and
upgraded about 4 of the parts, and its been running great for 17 years.
And it gets a regular beating.
